It was bound to happen at some point, but that doesn’t mean we can’t feel a little disappointment as the day has come and the Xbox 360 Marketplace is dead, Microsoft has shuttered it for good. The marketplace was up for almost two decades before the plug was finally pulled. Now, though, we just wait for the inevitable closure of the PS3 store.
The Marketplace’s closure was already well-known since August 2023, with not just games and subsequent DLC fizzling away, but also the Microsoft Movies & TV app not supporting the 360 anymore. Former Xbox vet, Larry Hyrb (better known as his online alias Major Nelson), took to X to thank the community for all the support during the last day before the platform’s unfortunate demise.
Almost 19 years on, all good things must come to an end. We are in the final 24 hours (or so) of the Xbox 360 Marketplace.
It was my pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I’ve given over the years.
Thank for having fun, playing fair and filing…

Xbox 360 Marketplace kicked off in 2005. While not the first digital storefront of its kind, it captured the hearts of many gamers with its simplicity and form. People liked the way it looked, and of course, most people no doubt never wanted it to go away. But, we are nearing what we suspect to be the tail-end of the Xbox Series consoles, leaving the 360 a whopping two generations behind.
Not to be the bearer of bad news, though, but we suspect one of these days, probably either later this year or 2025, PlayStation will finally just shut down the PS3 Store, it was a miracle and a signal of its strong community that Sony backed down from shuttering the storefront.
