What Were All The Games Revealed During The Future Of Gaming?

With so many new games announced during the recent The Future of Gaming, it can be hard to remember them all, and that’s why we’re bringing you the details on everything that’s been announced today. So sit back, and buckle in and prepare for the future of gaming!

GTA V: Enhanced Edition

Developer: Rockstar Games

Release Date: TBA 2021

While the game might be almost seven years old at this point, it’s still going strong, and while you wait with bated breath for news of GTA 6, you can at least take comfort in the fact that you can return to Los Santos and blow off some steam with any of the numerous ridiculous weapons and vehicles that have been added to the game over the past several years. At this time we don’t quite know what enhancements have been made for this version of the game, but it’s a safe bet that there will be a noticeable improvement in the graphics quality of the game, taking advantage, of course, of the PS5’s upgraded hardware.

What’s more, PS5 owners will get GTA Online free at launch, but you’ll, of course, need PS Plus. But don’t worry if you’re waiting to upgrade to the next generation because if you play on PS4 you’ll receive $1 Million in GTA Cash every month until the PS5 Version launches.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Developer: Insomniac Games

Release Date: Holiday 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHzuHo80U2M

Playstation’s first new game out of the gate is one that fans have been clamoring for, a sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man PS4. This next installment in the series is a little different as you’ll play as Miles Morales, the successor to Peter Parker’s moniker. Since the game’s initial reveal, Insomniac has clarified that it will be a standalone adventure and won’t be tied to any remastering or re-release of Spiderman PS4.

While the trailer doesn’t give us many story details, from the looks of things, Miles will be facing down a rogues gallery of villains armed with futuristic weaponry. But don’t worry, Peter Parker seemingly won’t be going anywhere as eagle-eyed viewers can catch a glimpse of him in the trailer if you pause it at just the right moment.

As we edge closer to the release of the PS5 it’ll be interesting to learn about Miles moveset as he seems to have a much more organic moveset compared to Peter Parker’s Spiderman. In the trailer we see Miles make use of his invisibility and trademark “Venom Blasts” to take down a collection of enhanced thugs.

Visually the game looks gorgeous, and with the extra rendering power that the PS5 affords, we’ll likely get an even bigger map to explore, which given the size of Spiderman-PS4 would be pretty impressive.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t have much more to offer us in terms of gameplay, but I’d wager Sony are saving more details for later this year so that they can keep the hype going all the way up to the PS5’s release.

Gran Turismo 7

Developer: Polyphony Digital

Release Date: TBD

Taking full advantage of those next-generation capabilities, Gran Turismo 7 is perhaps the most visually dynamic game of the showcase, with realistic graphics and sublime sounds that place you right in the driver’s seat. Even if you’re not a fan of the racing, I’d buy this game just to take advantage of the garage mode that enables you to fully explore any car you’ve unlocked in 3D.

The game also has a career mode that you’ll no doubt use to unlock a variety of impressive vehicles as your progress through it.

Unfortunately, no release date has been set for the game as of yet, but keep your eyes on Playstation’s social media feeds as you never know when they’ll throw down some more info.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Developer: Insomniac Games

Release Date: TBD

The latest entry in the Ratchet & Clank series looks extremely promising, not only does it look good adding in the all-important Ray-Tracing, but it also has a story that will see you hopping dimensions as Ratchet and Clank work to stop their old Arch-Nemesis Dr. Nefarious from conquering the universe. Armed with an ever-growing assortment of gadgets, you’ll have your work cut out for you as it looks like Ratchet and Clank will each be journeying solo for parts of the game, with Clank gaining a new ally in a brand new female character who bears a striking resemblance to Ratchet.

What’s more, thanks to upgraded hardware, you’ll be able to swap between dimensions instantly, meaning you’ll have an incredible hand new mechanic at your fingertips if you can master it.

This seems to be another game without a release date, so I’d expect it to come out sometime in 2021 at the earliest, with the worst-case scenario being that the game could come out Holiday 2021 or early 2022.

Project Athia

Developer: Square Enix

Release Date: TBD

One of the more mysterious games of today’s presentation, Project Athia seems to be an open-world RPG where you play like (we assume) Athia, a young woman with superhuman abilities that let her jump great heights and control plant life. But life doesn’t like it’ll be smooth sailing as the trailer shows us a variety of nightmarish beasts that will stand in your way, including a terrifying undead dragon with a burning core of fire at the center of it’s exposed ribcage.

Stray

Developer: BlueTwelve

Release Date: 2021

In a society where humans have gone extinct and robots are the dominant species, a lone cat wanders through this cybernetic metropolis, carrying important cargo on it’s back. At least, that’s what we can glean from the trailer for BlueTwelve’s upcoming game Stray. While we don’t get to see any actual gameplay or story details, the setting alone should be enough to convince you to get the game a try when it releases next year.

Returnal

Developer: HouseMarque

Release Date: TBD

One of the darker games to come out of the presentation, Returnal looks to be an intense, horror shooter with mind-bending twists and turns. From what little we’ve seen of the game today, we know that the character you play in the game is an astronaut stranded on a terrifying shadow planet filled to the brim with creatures made of living shadow. With the core element of the game being your inability to stay dead permanently, it’ll be interesting to see how that plays into the psychology of your character, perhaps the more times you experience death, the more vivid and horrific the monsters you find yourself pitted against becoming.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Developer: Sumo Digital

Release Date: TBD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUwI6e-em3o

That’s right Sackboy is back and no longer confined to the world of LittleBigPlanet, the adorable little doll is striking out on his own adventures. Packed with 3rd person platforming action, Sackboy’s very own game throws you into a vibrant and unique landscape filled with other cotton creations. You have to hop, skip and jump your way to victory over colorful bosses, but you needn’t go it alone as it looks like the game supports four-player co-op!

Destruction Allstars

Developer: Lucid

Release Date: TBD

Like Rocket League on steroids, Destruction Allstars is a neon-filled destruction derby, featuring what looks like an absurd amount of customization options for both your car and driver. The most interesting thing about the game however is the fact that players aren’t just limited to their cars if they want to get around the stadium. Indeed, if you want to come out on top you’d best be prepared to flex your parkour skills because if your ride gets wrecked you can either scale the scaffolding littered throughout the arena or hitch a ride on your opponent’s vehicle and if you’re lucky, maybe even steal it out from under them to get yourself back in the driver’s seat.

Kena: Bridge Of Spirits

Developer: Ember Lab

Release Date: TBD

Contending with Gran Turismo for the title of most graphically pleasing game of the show, Kena: Bridge Of Spirits is the first game from Ember Labs, and it looks extremely promising. So far. we know that you’ll play as the mysterious girl Kena, traveling around an ancient world, attempting to pacify the spirits of nature that have seemingly been corrupted. Along the way, you’ll be accompanied by a group of friendly, fuzzy spirits who are very reminiscent of the soot sprites from Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. But it won’t be smooth sailing as you’ll have an older, more powerful dark sorcerer to contend with, who we’d hazard a guess is probably the one going around enraging all these cute spirits. The gameplay itself seems to be a blend of combat and puzzle-solving, with both melee and magical attacks coming into play.

Goodbye Volcano High

Developer: KO-OP

Release Date: 2021

If you had “Dinosaur Visual Novel” on your PlayStation bingo card, now is the time to mark it off, because Goodbye Volcano High is here. Described as a cinematic, narrative adventure, you’ll help the lead character “Fang” as they navigate their final year at Volcano High. Expect plenty of teen angst and drama. One cool note, in my personal opinion, is that Fang is non-binary, meaning that they don’t identify exclusively as either male or female.

The game hit’s all the right buttons for me and I’m just sad I’ll have to wait until 2021 to fully experience the game, but I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.

Oddworld Soulstorm

Developer: Oddworld Inhabitants

Release Date: TBD

Billed as a reimagined version of Abe’s Exodus this new entry in the Oddworld franchise sees you once again play as Abe, as you lead your newly liberated army of Mudokon’s in a quest through a steampunk wasteland, rebelling against the systems that imprisoned you. Given that it’s been six years since the last entry in the series, fans will notice definite improvements in terms of mechanics, gameplay, and graphics quality.

GhostWire: Tokyo

Developers: Tango Gameworks

Release Date: 2021

Set in a mysterious and supernatural version of Tokyo, Japan, in GhostWire you play as a young man who sees yokai and other spirits. Using a unique mix of spellcasting and exorcism techniques, it’ll be up to you and your allies to keep the people of Tokyo safe from everything that goes bump in the night.

I was struck by how crisp the visuals were for this game, the spellcasting alone is so we choreographed, with the complex hand movements flowing perfectly into the vibrant magical effects. This is one of my favorites of the presentation.

JETT: The Far Shore

Developers: Superbrothers

Release Date: Holiday 2020

Set after an unknown event leaves the Earth uninhabitable, JETT: The Far Shore sees you play as a colonist searching for a new home for the remnants of humanity. from what little gameplay we’ve seen, you’ll spend a lot of time hurtling across various interstellar landscapes as a small scouting vessel, boldly going where no-one has gone before. Little else is known about the game at this time, but with a release window of the holiday season this year, we should hopefully get some more deals sooner, rather than later.

Godfall

Developer: Counterplay games

Publisher: Gearbox Interactive

Release Date: Holiday 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oal1EbvDxCk

Having been teased at last year’s Game Awards, it’s accurate to say there was a certain air of hype of mystery surrounding Godfall. Blending High Fantasy and Sci-Fi concepts, Godfall is beautiful to look at, but then again so was Anthem and we all know how that’s turned out.

The gameplay revealed today showcases the three available classes that you’ll be able to pick up on day one, each presumably having their own specialties EG; light weapons, heavy weapons, and a class that balances between the two. Definite inspiration has been taken from the Monster Hunter series as you can feel a weight behind every strike. This, of course, means that you’ll have to think on your feet and learn your enemies’ patterns and attacks, something which given the games apparent plethora of bosses to fight, will be no small feat.

Control-wise, you’ll be commanding your character from an over-the-shoulder perspective, which again draws some unfortunate comparisons to Anthem, perhaps Gearbox is hoping to corner the market, while EA’s relatively small teamwork to try and remake their failed game.

With a release date of this year, and Gearbox’s habit of showing off their games with multiple vignettes, I’d keep my eye on their youtube channel just in case they decide to sneak a trailer out in the near future.

Solar Ash

Developer: Heart Machine

Release Date: 2021

Simple, yet elegant, Solar Ash comes from the makers of Hyper Light Drifter and aesthetics wise is its spiritual successor. Attacked by a mysterious entity, the player must navigate through a ruined civilization, fighting massive creatures and overcoming challenging obstacles.

Hitman III

Developer: IO Interactive

Release Date: January 2021

Coming in at the start of the new year, Hitman III  will be the conclusion to the modern trilogy of games. The titular character finds himself alone, disowned by his employers and on the run. From the showcase, we know that at least part of the game will be set in Dubai. Players will have access to new costumes, new weapons, and even more methods of assassination than ever before.

Astro’s Playroom

Developer: Playstation Japan

Release Date: PlayStation Launch

A cute, adventure game, Astro’s Playroom will be a free pre-loaded game for the PS5. Developed by PlayStation Japan, this is a brilliant move on Sony’s part because if there’s one thing everyone enjoys, it’s a free game. While Astro’s Playroom doesn’t necessarily do anything new, it’s a good way for Sony to showcase the potential of their hardware and software and it’s family-friendly as well, so when everyone’s crowded around Timmy’s brand new PS5 on Christmas day, they’ll all have a good impression of the console, which is something you wouldn’t get if it was Kratos ripping a guy in half instead. It’ll also be good for those few kids whose parents forget to set up the PlayStation beforehand as they’ll at least have something to do while they wait for Fortnite to download.

Little Devil Inside

Developer: Neostream

Release Date: TBD

Another one of the stranger games to come out of the presentation, Little Devil inside is equal parts adorable and terrifying. The game seems to have you playing a young adventurer, venturing out from your elegant mansion, to travel across the world hunting down exotic and dangerous creatures. Dragons, abominable snowmen, giant squid, and cockatrices are just some of the beasts you’ll encounter. The monsters you kill seem to be able to be taken back to your base, perhaps so you can craft better weapons and armor for yourself and upgrade your base while you’re at it.

There seems to be a lot of variation in the environments and a ton of exploring to be had if that’s your thing. No voice acting to be heard of though. But if things get too quiet you can always throw on the Monster Hunter World Soundtrack for some added ambiance.

NBA 2K21

Developer: 2K

Release Date: Fall 2020

The latest in the NBA series brings updated rosters, as well as enhanced and polished graphics to the PS5. Boasting improved load speeds, as well as new features, game modes, and tons more content for basketball fans. It’s interesting to note that games in the NBA series typically drop every September, but it looks like 2K have chosen to delay the release of the game this year to coincide with the PS5 Launch, something that will probably serve them well sales-wise as customers will be hungry for games to play on their new consoles.

Bugsnax

Developer: Young Horses

Release Date: Holiday 2020

The weirdest game to come out of this PlayStation event, Bugsnax is like Viva Pinata meets Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Journey to an island populated by anthropomorphic animals who live alongside strange bug/food hybrid creatures. In a twist that’s like something out of the Island of Dr. Moreau, eating these Bugsnax seems to transform parts of the animal villagers’ bodies, whether it’s curly fry-shaped arms, hotdog hands or pastry haircuts, this is going to be an experience.

Demon’s Souls Remake

Developer: Bluepoint Games

Release Date: TBA

Credited with kicking off the brutally challenging Dark Souls series. Demon’s Souls was originally released in 2009 for the PS3. Unfortunately, it didn’t achieve much success in Japan, but it did find a loyal fanbase in other parts of the world. If you’re a fan of Dark Souls then this will be a must-have game for your collection.

Deathloop

Developer: Arkane Studios

Release Date: TBA

As soon as I saw Arkane studios appear, I knew were going to get something stylish and Assassin-y (totally a word btw) and I saw not disappointed. The game stars protagonist Colt, an assassin sent on a job to a thriving party island, he finds more than he bargained for however when the island’s protector Julianna ‘Jules’ Blake guns him down. But Colt’s story doesn’t end there, because he wakes up right back where he started.

It’s clear that Arkane studios have poured all they’ve learned from the Dishonored franchise into this game, the gunplay and special abilities especially seem reminiscent of dishonored’s main protagonist Corvo, with Colt being able to telekinetically attract or repulse objects and teleport around his surroundings. To complete the game, you’ll have to gather information across your various playthroughs and use that knowledge to hunt down your targets, and finally break the loop.

Resident Evil Village

Developer: Capcom

Release Date: 2021

When this trailer popped up, literally nobody could have predicted it’d be for the next Resident Evil game, Resident Evil Village. Continuing from Resident Evil: Biohazard players will once again play as Ethan, as he travels to a mysterious village that’s plagued by dark machinations. Joining him is series regular Chris Redfield, and thankfully this time he looks a lot more like the Chris we know and love. The trailer is jam-packed with occultists, mutant werewolves, psychotic villagers and like any good Resident Evil game, the tone is delightfully unsettling.

Pragmata

Developer: Capcom

Release Date: 2022

Another game set in a post-apocalyptic world, Pragmata at least seems like it’s doing something different with the concept, while it’s hard to gather much information from the trailer alone, we know that you’re an astronaut paired with a robotic girl. Your character seemingly carries a portable 3D printer on his back that allows the girl to create items that can help you on your journey. Not much else known about this game at this time, and we’ll probably have to wait until next year to get some actual gameplay, but it’ll interesting to see if Capcom breaks the mold and leaks details over the next two years to build up a bit more of a following.

Horizon Forbidden West

Developer: Guerilla

Release Date: TBA

With the new generation, it was, of course, inevitable that we’d get the next instalment of the breathtaking Horizon games.

The second game picks up with Aloy traveling west, tracking the path of a mysterious contagion that’s destroying everything organic in her way. During her journey Aloy will encounter vast underwater areas for the first time, dealing with new robotic threats such as giant crocodiles and pteranodons. Also of concern are hostile tribes that have learned to control the machine beasts, including giant mechanical mammoths.

Visually, like most of the other games in this showcase, the cinematics are exemplary, but with little gameplay on display, it’s hard to judge just how much Horizon II will take advantage of the PS5’s upgrade tech. Thankfully, with it being one of the last console generations best-selling titles, I’d imagine Guerilla games are putting everything they’ve got into making it a success.

That’s It!

That’s every game unveiled by Sony during their conference. We’ve seen a fair bit of variety in the types of games that will be on offer next generation, but also a lot of the same themes, e.g. dark, bleak futuristic worlds. Perhaps this is just the trend at the moment. I for one am genuinely curious to see what else Microsoft is going to bring to the table, as we’re still waiting for those elusive Halo: Infinite details.

Do any of these games excite you? Are you going to be picking up a PS5 on launch day? Let us know on social media Replaywire and Wolfencreek.
