It’s safe to say The Video Game Awards Show was a washout that left a salty bitter taste in many viewers’ mouths. It felt like we watched three hours of unexciting commercials and only 30 minutes about the awards. However, it’s not to say there wasn’t a couple of moments that got people to straighten their backs. Most people would highlight and start drooling over the announcement of Sephiroth joining Super Smash Bros: Ultimate. As amazing as that is, there is another announcement that’s gathering a lot of attention. The Callisto Protocol, a survival horror game being developed by Dead Space veterans! Finally, Dead Space is getting a spiritual successor that could make fans whole again.
What is The Callisto Protocol?
As of right now, juicy details about this game are shrouded in mystery. We only have one trailer giving us an idea of what the game is going to be like. It’s a sci-fi survival horror set on Jupiter’s second-largest moon, Callisto. There lies a prison, Black Iron Prison. Within the prison, inmates are being mutilated and killed by creatures that look to be a concoction of a Necromorph, Xenomorph, and with a sprinkle of Lovecraftian horrors.
The same trailer did receive a red-band version. It’s mostly the same, but the brutality was cranked up to Dead Space levels. So, we can expect this game not to pull its punches when it comes to gore, blood, mutilation, and character deaths. After all, it’s being developed by the same people that forced gamers to slowly stick a needle in Isaac Clarke’s eye.
No word on who the protagonist besides it being an inmate of this prison. The same goes for the antagonist, we only know that United Jupiter Company is running the prison and seems to be very sketchy with skeletons in their closet.
Dead Space’s DNA Carried Over?
It’s obvious that some of Dead Space‘s DNA is being used for The Callisto Protocol, but how much is being implemented? Well, the RIG (player’s health bar) has been incorporated in a new way. Dead Space displayed the player’s health on the back of the character. Here, it looks to be on the character’s neck. Given that it has a similar design to the RIG, so it’s easy to imagine seeing those bars on it decrease as the player takes damage.
Will the gameplay be anything like Dead Space? In some aspects, yes. In others, no. It will be a third-person survival horror game and that’s about it. However, the game’s director and creator, Glen Schofield, did an interview with Polygon. Sadly, they couldn’t get much gameplay details out of him, but in that interview, they did state that he did occasionally compare Dead Space to The Callisto Protocol. Planning to honor Dead Space, yet, being able to stand out of its shadow. Does this mean dismemberment will play a key role in the player’s survival?
It’s Part of PUBG’s Universe?
This information is probably very bizarre for most people. The Callisto Protocol is set in the future of the PUBG universe… Yes, this is real. The game is being published by the same publisher as PUBG, but it still catches people off-guard. Schofield states that “I presented this game to them, and so what we did was we made it fit within the PUBG storyline.” Not sure why they chose this or what this means for PUBG as a whole. We will update when more information comes out.
Hopefully soon, we can get more information about the game’s story, characters, and gameplay. The game is set to release in 2022 on consoles and PC.
