To impressive acclaim, the Super Smash Bros. franchise expanded its roster with their next two DLC characters at E3 this week. “The Hero” from Dragon Quest and Banjo & Kazooie from the games of the same name will soon join the legion of available fighters when purchased either as standalone DLC “Challenger Packs” or as a part of the Fighters Pass.
They join Piranha Plant and Joker in an already jam-packed roster of old favorites like Mario mixed with newcomers like Incineroar. The Super Smash Bros. roster currently tops out at 73 fighters, including these two new additions.
The Hero
“The Hero” offers what seem to be mechanics tied to Dragon Quest’s RPG roots. The cinematic release trailer revealed that the mechanic utilizes a menu for selecting spells. “The Hero” can use these spells in combat, much like Shulk uses the Monado Arts. The trailer also teased a new stage and music from the franchise. “The Hero” also has multiple unique skins, likely in the same vein as Bowser Jr. It’s unclear if each character will have a different name, or if they will all share the moniker of “The Hero”. The critically acclaimed series is releasing a title on the Nintendo Switch with others soon on the way.
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo & Kazooie also made a huge uproar in a separate reveal trailer. The wacky duo showcased a variety of strange moves that complemented their personalities, such as Banjo shooting projectiles out of Kazooie like a rifle. The duo hasn’t seen a game release since a remaster in 2008 on the Xbox 360. Despite this, Banjo-Kazooie is still incredibly popular, even today. The trailer also revealed a new stage and featured some of the music that may accompany the bear and bird into Smash Bros.
“The Hero” will release as DLC this summer, while Banjo & Kazooie will release as DLC later on in the fall. Both come with the Fighters Pass and can also be individually purchased.
