State Of Play Event Was Underwhelming

Sony recently had a PlayStation State of Play event and it was underwhelming. I was genuinely excited about the event because Sony been killing it with their exclusive titles like Spider-Man PS4, God of War, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Sadly, I was disappointed by the event. An event mostly comprised of VR (Virtual Reality) games and very little triple ‘A’ games. Don’t get me wrong, there were a couple of good moments, but nothing that made me drool with anticipation.

The first announcement was a roller coaster of emotions. Marvel’s fan favorite, Iron Man, is getting his own video game. I probably can speak for most fans; our hopes was that Iron Man would get the Spider-Man PS4 treatment. Getting a big and beautiful open-world to fly around in and blow stuff up. Kind of like Anthem, but good. However, our hopes were dashed when we realized it’s a VR on rail shooter. From excitement to miserable blue balls.

Iron Man isn’t the only one getting the VR treatment. Five Nights At Freddy’s and No Man’s Sky (through No Man’s Sky Beyond) will be receiving VR versions as well. Fixing haunted animatronics and flying through the cosmos in VR sounds like fun. If you are a fan of either franchise, you may get a kick out of it. Still, it’s not what I was looking forward to.

There were a couple of big-budget games shown off: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, Days Gone, Mortal Kombat 11, and, Concrete Genie. Here’s the problem, none of these games saved the event. Crash Team Racing is a classic and I’m looking forward to playing again, but nothing mouthwatering. I legitimately forgot Days Gone was a game and probably will the next day. Mortal Kombat 11 could have saved the event, but its trailer was hard to sit through. Why do they keep putting rap music that in no way fits the visuals? It’s really distracting. Concrete Genie doesn’t look like my cup of tea, so I will most likely skip it.

Overall, Sony’s State Of Play was a wash. It’s something you would put on in the background to drown out the silence. Maybe next time, they will show off more compelling games and not theater intermissions.
