Rockstar Games is absolutely no stranger to controversy and we’re sure what with all the rage of making a video game into a movie, Grand Theft Auto is a prime candidate. Apparently, reports show that a GTA movie could’ve been in the works when the game’s popularity started catching wind.
According to Bugzy Malone’s Grandest Game (via Eurogamer), which talked with Earthworm Jim director and DMA Designs bud, Kirk Ewing, he recalled a late night where he discussed movie tie-ins and adaptations with Sam Houser.
The podcast discussion went further with Ewing revealing there was a time when an LA producer displayed interest in adapting the game into a movie. The movie would’ve had Eminem starring and Top Gun‘s Tony Scott as its director. Rockstar would get $5 million “on the nose.”
After hearing the possible movie adaptation opportunity, though, Houser didn’t seem interested in the idea.
“At that point, they withdrew from any conversation about making a film when they realized the media franchise they had was bigger than any movie that was going on at the time.”
Considering the rocky journey that video game movies have gone through, it was probably for the best that GTA didn’t get this treatment and focused on creating the games we all know to this day.
