Resident Evil 4 will NEVER Die

It just dawned on me that Resident Evil 4 has been ported to every single console, beginning as a GameCube “exclusive”. But, Capcom couldn’t keep their legs closed. It has been re-released on everything: PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U, Steam, Microsoft Windows, iOS, Andriod, Zeebo, and now the Nintendo Switch in 2019. I guarantee you that Resident Evil 4 will still be ported to future consoles. Why though? Why won’t Resident Evil 4 die?

There can be plenty of reasons, but I believe there are two main ones. The first main reason: Simply porting Resident Evil 4 to a new console makes Capcom bank. By 2006, Resident Evil 4 sold over four million copies on GameCube and the PlayStation 2 alone. It sold 1.6 million on the GameCube and 3.62 million on the PlayStation 2. In 2007, it was ported over to the Wii and sold over 2.22 million copies. PS4 version sold 0.10 million and Xbox One sold 0.05 million in 2018. No official numbers were released on the PS3 or Xbox 360, however. Porting over Resident Evil 4 is very cheap and it’s a guarantee to make money. Despite it being an over decade old game, so why do people keep buying it?

The second main reason: It’s a damn good game that’s worth buying again. Resident Evil 4 is a staple of the sixth generation of consoles. To this day, it’s still being praised as the best third-person survival horror game. A survival horror game that reinvented the franchise and third-person shooter genre.

Despite being two console generations later, I find myself yearning to play it again. Heck, I’m half-tempted to buy it again on the PS4. Why though? I already stated that it’s a damn good game but, there is more to that. Resident Evil 4 is ridiculously fun and unique. From start to finish, the game keeps you engaged with a variety of enemies, locations, and over-the-top set pieces. I can never get tired of seeing Leon riding a mine cart or running away from a giant stone statue of a squeaky Napoleon. That sounds like the pinnacle peak of craziness, but the story is the icing on the cake.

The story is the ultimate B-horror plot. You play as Leon S. Kennedy, a returning character on a mission to save the president’s hot, annoying daughter from a secret death cult. Leon is pushed to his limits as he faces countless monsters and the death cult’s world ending plan. The story is completely self-aware and a B-horror charm that makes it an absolute blast.

I’m not going to go into a full review of the game but, you get the idea. Resident Evil 4 is an amazing game that will stand the test of time. Years from now, Resident Evil 4 will be continued to be played and ported to every console because it’s cheap and makes money still. The only way Resident Evil 4 will die is if they remake it like with the upcoming RE:2. Everyone may stop playing the original for the newer, shinier one, but that’s if they don’t botch it up. RE:2 shows to be taking a different tone and it’s undecided if fans like this new route. If they botch this new route with RE:4; the original will continue to live.
