Redbox ceases game rental

Redbox Ceases Game Rental Service

While a ton of gamers prefer digital downloads when it comes to their entertainment, others enjoy the feel of a physical disk. In that same right, some prefer to rent games before they buy. This has been a bit more difficult now, though, as those options are mostly gone. Services like GameFly exist, but those come with monthly fees and aren’t the most reliable. We all know what happened to Blockbuster, too. Now, there’s Redbox, one where it’s easier to get your hands on the game you want. But, now that’s going away.

As Reddit users have found, this has dissipated and all you can do is purchase games instead of renting them. This decision came out of nowhere as users were initially confused and went to Twitter to ask what’s going on. Redbox’s support account confirmed what Redditors thought.

They gave gamers a silver lining with deals on purchasing games which drop some of the newest releases to $39.99. That being said, this won’t last forever as Redbox will end game sales as a whole early next year.

The reason behind this change of focus was explained Monday.

Some speculate it could also be due to fake games being returned and people stealing games.

Redbox’s official statement isn’t the clearest it could be, though. Not only are they stopping a service that basically cornered the concept, but also a service people enjoyed because it didn’t break the bank compared to just buying the game.
