EVO, the biggest video game tournament in the world is known for many things. One of those things is Super Smash Bros. Melee, a fighting game released on the Nintendo GameCube all the way back in 2001. It has been part of the tournament, first appearing in 2007, but looks like things are about to change.

EVO has recently released their 2019 line-up for the tournament, and while a bunch of loved games are there, Melee is not. This isn’t the first time Melee has been missing from an EVO. In 2008, instead of a Melee Tournament, there was a Brawl Tournament, which was highly criticized. It wouldn’t be until 2013 when Melee would reappear, and even that had some trouble as Nintendo tried to cease and desist the live stream, but failed, and Melee continued to appear. It didn’t appear EVO Japan, but that was put down to it not being popular in the region.

Now, Melee is being replaced by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has shown a vivid competitive scene since it’s launch in December. While there has been a heavy backlash by fans of the game, some have shown reason, pointing out a lack of growth in the competitive scene, or even Melee being 18 years old. Keyword: Some. Most of the Internet is in mourning of the lost, with quite a large portion attacking.

It’ll remain to be seen if EVO goes back on their line-up and adds Melee to the Tournament. But, even if we don’t see it, I’m sure EVO will still see a mountain of success this year with games like Dragon Ball FighterZ, the already mentioned Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, or even the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11.
