There have been plenty of games that have somehow transcended into a huge culture overnight, think Fortnite, but one franchise trumps even the battle royale – Grand Theft Auto. With the release of Grand Theft Auto V came its Grand Theft Auto Online element that has stood the test of time.
A ton of let’s players and streamers still to this day enjoy gaming on public servers with their fans or in private with a select group of buds, making the game always teeming with life. Top that off with Rockstar Games’ undying support for the 2013 title, something Red Dead Online simply couldn’t top, and you have a success story told through the ages. Now, it’s looking like it plans on dividing its audience by implementing more single-player options in the online title.
During an interview with GQ, Scott Butchard, GTA’s design director, discussed Cayo Perico Heist alongside Tarek Hamad. The heist is the latest – and largest – update to Online to date. In the update, the studio did something that seems almost counter-intuitive – it allows players to go in solo. It sounds like this won’t be the last time fans can expect GTA Online to go that route with Butchard outright telling the magazine that the single-player element isn’t going anywhere.
“I think you can see that with Online and I think going forward we’re going to inject more of that single-player element in there.”
This comes well after rumors made its rounds around the internet claiming that single-player content was canned in favor of DLC and updates for Online. This might seem like a weird decision, but it’s a tactical one to draw in those who miss going solo.
