The Lord of the Rings: Gollum developer, Daedalic Entertainment, is retreating from the game dev side of things following the poor reception of the title.
It’s no secret the Gollum-focused game hit a brick wall after its controversial release. Critics found it among the worst games of the year, and that’s quite a shame as it was among the first games to reveal next-gen plans in 2019.
Games Wirtschaft (via IGN) reported, the studio will return to focusing on “game publishing, sales, and marketing.” On top of that news, it turns out the studio will be cutting its staff, with 25 employees affected by layoffs.
The news also puts a stop to the second Lord of the Rings game, codenamed Magic. They haven’t completely stopped working on developing games, though, they are still trying to save face by fixing up Gollum before heading out completely. It’s also still aiming to release the Nintendo Switch version, with it supposedly due out later this year.
