Fable co-creator, Dene Carter, admitted that the adventure series could’ve ended up vastly different if it wasn’t for one source of inspiration — Devil May Cry. It may sound crazy as the games are pretty different from each other, but the creator does explain it better.
On a tyraid on Twitter, the developer explained that he “ripped off” Devil May Cry, not in terms of story of characters, but rather in scope. He counted the number of areas, the size of each, and how long you’d spend in each area, using those factors as base points for the entirety of the fictional land of Albion found within the series.
He also credited Silent Hill and Way of the Samurai as inspirations, too.
Carter, of course, didn’t actually rip-off the Capcom property, after all, looking between the two IPs, there are plenty of differences to set them apart from each other least among them being DMC and Fable‘s stories.
“Literally copying the scope of DMC, the interaction density of Silent Hill, and the encounter style of the first Way of the Samurai changed Fable from a floppy, undefined, never-ending deathmarch to something we could actually complete *without* ever having worked on a 3D game.”
I'm sure everyone knows this hack already, but I'm going to talk about it anyway, on the off-chance that it saves someone from going completely off-the-rails during their dev. It's a hint about scope, when you're feeling lost: steal it. 100% rip it off from another game.
