It’s gone for good. In 2016, Lionhead Studios closed down, bringing with it a series of pretty popular games including the Fable series. While at the tail-end of its life, Fable went down a shakey route, many players still clung to hope that it would come back. A few months after, former Lionhead employees formed a new studio to create a spin-off of the game franchise in the ways of Fable Fortune.
The game was a card game was in active development while the studio shuttered. Not wanting to see it go to waste, Flaming Fowl Studios got to work on making the game work enough to play. The end result was a card game that was released to Early Access on Steam in 2017. In a recent update, they have confirmed the game will be shutting down soon.
This month is going to be the last month fans can play the game. The servers will be shut down next month and its store offline. This means players cannot purchase card packs. If you’re in possession of card packs, though, you’ll still be able to open them before the servers go offline in March.
Fable Fortune got out of Early Access early 2018 and went on to have 30 seasons and six heroes, but overall, it wasn’t enough to keep it going. This isn’t even the first time a Fable game was canned. Another free-to-play game, Fable Legends, which Microsoft heavily marketed, was canceled after it was delayed to the first or second quarter of 2016. Its open beta was the last fans saw of it.
It’s unclear if the franchise is going to come back, but the rumor mills are spinning in that favor as job descriptions and potential leaks point to the fantasy epic that is the franchise. With Microsoft heading into the new generation with the Xbox Series X, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were waiting for the right time to reveal the next adventure to fans.
Servers will remain operational until March 4, 2020
