Pokémon‘s Detective Pikachu has just made film history! Releasing quite recently in May of this year, the film has already grossed over $436 million dollars. This beats out 2016’s Warcraft, which comes at a close second with $433 million dollars.
It is clear that video game adaptions have tended to do pretty well for themselves as of recent years. And with more film instalments such as Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog coming within the next year, there is much reason for gamers to be excited. Only time will tell if these adaptions live up to the hype.
While these statistics are breathtaking, many may wonder how Detective Pikachu is doing so well. In fact, Detective Pikachu continues to have showings in Colombia, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, and Slovenia, the ball is still rolling. In this weekend alone, the film made over $7 million dollars. The film met wonderful reception and grossed a whopping $161 million during its opening weekend. In this alone, it also holds the title for best opening weekend for a video game film.
Reviews online remain mixed, as is the case with most video game film adaptions. As of the writing of this article, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 60% amongst critics and an 81% score from audiences. Perhaps these films really are intended for the niche gamer demographic.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu is now available digitally. Pre-orders for its Blu-Ray release on August 6th are out now. While many rumors have been released about an upcoming sequel, the Pokémon Company remains on the down-low.
Don’t think this is the last you’ll be seeing of the series: a new game has recently been announced for the Switch. Details will come shortly.
